A note before you read. We make both makeup bags and vanity cases, so we use our own four designs as the worked example below. The same questions apply to any brand's bags.
The two terms get used interchangeably in product listings, and that is a problem when you are trying to buy the right thing. A "vanity bag" on one site is a soft pouch. On another it is a hard box with a mirror.
The difference that matters is not the name. It is the shape, and what the shape does to the things inside it.
If your routine has grown from a few makeup items into serums, toners and a moisturizer that comes in a pump, you have probably already felt the limits of a low bag. This is how to tell which shape your kit needs.
The real difference is height
A makeup bag is designed around a horizontal layout. Items sit side by side, and the best designs open so you see all of them from above. That works well for things that are small or flat: compacts, palettes, pencils, lipsticks.
A vanity case is designed around a vertical layout. It is taller than it is deep, with a lid that opens high, so bottles can stand. That works well for liquids you do not want lying on their side.

The counterintuitive part: the bigger case is not always the one that holds more of your kit
It is natural to assume the largest case holds the most. For a makeup-heavy kit, that is often not true.
Compare the Travel Makeup Bag and the Vanity Case. The Vanity Case is taller by more than two inches. The Travel Makeup Bag is longer by about two inches and opens flat. For twenty small items, such as pencils, lipsticks, compacts and a couple of palettes, the long, low bag gives each one a visible spot. In the taller case, small items end up stacked in the bottom, under the bottles.
For a skincare-heavy kit, the reverse holds. Four pump bottles lying on their side in a low bag take up the whole floor and put pressure on the pumps. In a vanity case they stand in a row and take up one side.
So capacity depends on what you pack, not on the dimensions alone. The useful question is not "which is bigger?" but "is my kit mostly tall or mostly flat?"

What to do with this
- Measure your tallest bottle. If it is taller than a bag's interior height, it will lie on its side. That single number decides most of this.
- Sort your kit into tall and flat. Whichever pile is bigger tells you which shape to buy.
- Weigh the case, not just the contents. Structure adds weight. The heaviest case here is about twice the lightest.

Structure. A vanity case holds its shape with bottles inside, which takes stiffer walls and a frame. In the four designs we compared, the heaviest vanity case weighs about twice as much as the lightest makeup bag. If you fly carry-on only, weigh that against the benefit of upright bottles.
